Ecotourism is always a double edged sword. When it’s small and sustainable it can provide fair income for small oceanside communities and encourage conservation. But when it becomes overly commercialized, local communities change, and not always for the best, large companies get involved, and animals take second or third place to profits and guest satisfaction. Sometimes the shot becomes a lot more important than the subject. Sometimes the subject becomes the guest and not the animal they’ve come to see and experience.

That’s the most depressing part of our work. Watching this happen to places we once fell in love with, watching social harmony get torn apart by greed, watching animals harassed by dozens of boats. That’s not the kind of experiences we want for anyone.

So we have dedicated ourselves to exploring the incredible by gatekeeping locations. True wildlife is best experienced when it’s not so predictable. True expeditions require genuine exploration. We have to work for it. But we get to enjoy the solace of actual respectful encounters away from the crowds.
